The Reed School Committee worked very hard to get the school registered on the National Register of Historic Places. The school was placed on the list on November 21, 2001.The school project is moving along great. While it does not look as though anything is happening at the school, there is a lot being done in the background to prepare for seeking out grant funds. We have over $7,000.00 raised toward the project so far.
The committee has since been dissolved. We were not successful in receiving a grant as most grantors wanted us to put in too high of a percentage and they wanted it staffed and open to the public which we were not able to do.
The Selectmen have been using the funds raised to keep the school repaired and continue the upkeep of the school as the National Treasure it is. Always ensuring any maintenance doesn't endanger the listing of our National Treasure.
Bette Bickford (former schoolteacher), Ralph Bickford, Debby & Amanda Cone, Larry Hamilton, Janice Hall, and Georgene Salpietro all worked very hard raising the funds raised and ensuring the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bette Bickford was very instrumental in submitting all the paperwork to achieve this task. Many thanks to Bette.
Sadly, we lost John Pullen in February 2003, his historical knowledge was vast, and he was glad to share stories of his time at the Reed School with us. He wrote a book about Joshua Chamberlain and his Civil War experiences.
John Pullen would donate to the Reed School Fund yearly. We give many thanks to his survivors.
We are always looking for the names of Reed School Alumni and Alumni from any of the five one-room schoolhouses that once dotted Amity. Please contact Debby through the town office or the Contact Us form.
